MAKING STRIDES FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY
It was a great kick-off of our Research to Action Process on 11/13 with 80 leaders from 18 congregations at Allen Temple AME Church in Ybor City last week.
Though it was noisy and a bit crowded, it was great to have 45 leaders in the break-out group of the Affordable Housing Trust Fund Committee. Leaders of the committee worked to quickly inform new leaders of our county's affordable housing problem and our trust fund issue. Everyone personally shared why they were interested in affordable housing and then we briefly planed next steps in our campaign to get the Board of County Commissioners to establish a Hillsborough Affordable Housing Trust Fund with an ongoing dedicated local public funding source that generates $10 million annually to create and rehab decent housing that is affordable for working families and seniors with low incomes.
As we saw this weekend, the media continues to highlight the problem which only makes it more obvious that we need a local solution that we can count on to tackle the affordable housing problem in our county.
We still have lots of strategizing to do in our campaign, so we have scheduled a few research meetings and a "Messaging Workshop" that we hope you will attend.
We also set our 2018 Affordable Housing Committee Meetings through May, which are on Mondays, at 6:30 pm, at the HOPE Office, 5103 N. Central Ave. Tampa 33603 (About 4 blocks south of Hillsborough Ave, in education building behind St. Paul Lutheran Church sanctuary)
· January 29
· March 5
· March 26
· April 9
· May 7
Please confirm which meetings you are able to attend so your congregation is represented. The more meetings you attend, the more you will understand the issue and the players, and be able to help strategize our next steps together.
To learn more about our Affordable Housing Trust Fund issue, please review the attached PDF files with the HOPE Trust Fund Proposal and the HOPE AHTF PowerPoint Presentation. You can also learn more about Housing Trust Funds across the country by going the the website: www.housingtrustfundproject.org The background of our work on this issue was in the Convention AH Report.
As we consistently build our power and persistently work together to develop our issue campaign, we will improve the quality of life for thousands of families who struggle with the high cost of housing!
